Well it’s finally here. The 2007-08 season begins tonight for the low-expectation Sixers. It may appear that I’m not a fan of the team. This isn’t the case at all. I’m often most critical of the things I love. I just want the best for the franchise, and we’ve gotten short shrift for a few seasons now. I wish the team the best of luck and the best of health. I have faith that Mo Cheecks will do his damnedest to get this team on the right track. I just don’t know how much that will matter. Iguodala, contract or no extension will be fun to watch year long. Korver will hop off the bench and bang threes. Who knows what Dalembert, Williams, and Willie Green will do - but I’ll be watching. I scored some tickets to the home opener on Saturday night, and I’m geeked up! Besides the fact, that I am just a huge NBA fan - let’s enjoy the ride.

On to the news around the way

  • How the league works, sadly. From HoopsWorld –>Seriously: The Modern NBA
  • King says (on the Bulls), “When I heard that, I thought, “Yeah, right. You can’t build through the draft. But I’ve watched, and they’ve done it. They’ve had patience.” Unlike King, they’ve had patience. –>Will Sixers stay patient with King?
  • Another damn work ethic story, Bob Ford reaching –>76ers bank on work ethic, patience
  • How to market a team that no one cares about –>Marketing staff tries to be creative in its sales pitch
  • John Smallwood states the obvious on philly.com, Sixers need some answers (funny pun, hah) –>Sixers need answers more than wins
  • Herbert Hill has successful knee surgery –>Rookie F Hill undergoes successful surgery
  • Even the Canadians think the 76ers will stink –>Philadelphia 76ers picked to finish last in improved Eastern Conference
  • I like David Aldridge a lot. But I have to say that he must have been a lot tipsy to write this article –>Dalembert as anchor will keep 76ers sailing

  • The 76ers got their 2nd win of the preseason against the Jason Kidd-less Nets, 91-83. No one shot above 50%, except Andre Miller who shot 8-10. The Sixers defense continues to look good against the 2nd and 3rd teir players of other teams. Louis Williams played only 8 minutes, odd. I don’t have much else to say about this game. But if this is the last warm up before the real season begin - well - there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Two grown men try and hold Iggy down - (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

The NBA news keeps coming. Most people agree the 76ers will stink something awful.

Sixers drop another to the Knicks

For the 2nd time this preseason the 76ers faced off against the New York Knicks. The end result was nearly the same. The Sixers lost 90 to 103. The squad shot under 40% and were handily outrebounded. They did show some effort on defense, forcing 24 turnovers. But, this is a shady Knicks team, not an elite group at all, and they played 15 players. Once again Andre Miller led the team in scoring and attempts. This just kills me. Everyone praises him for his “true point guard” status. Yeah he shot 50% this game but if this happens in the regular season I’m gonna revolt. There’s been a ton of news around the 76ers over the past few days. I guess the NBA fever is pitching up. It’s surely not the team itself creating buzz.

  • FanHouse’s Tom Ziller points out some additional painful truths about Billy King’s latest moves –>Philly’s comical draft just got worse
  • After weeks of saying that Dalembert was fine, and that he’d be ready for the season, the truth is finally coming out: he is not ready and is in and out of a protective boot, still –>Dalembert not a certainty for opener
  • The Sports Watchers, 76ers season prediction, 29-53–>NBA Predictions - Philadelphia 76ers
  • Phil Jasner proclaims, “No meaningless games now”. That’s funny, because I thought it was the opposite. –>No meaningless games now
  • Worldwide Sport News (a blog with a big name), reports that negotiations with Andre Iguodala are ongoing. Billy king is quoted saying, “There have been a lot of situations where guys have gone into a contract year and had their best seasons”. That is such a useless statement. AND, if they don’t get this extension done and he does have a great year - then what? –>Are the Sixers going to extend Iguodala?
  • The 76ers finally got their first win of the preseason (now 1-4) against the Boston Celtics: 76ers 96 - Celtics 78. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce sat out, but a win is a win, right? The whole team played reasonably well. Jason Smith had his best game yet, grabbing 9 rebounds and scoring 16 points. The only problem with that is this: the Celtics didn’t have anyone over 6′ 9″ on the court all night. Jason Smith is 7′ tall. Reggie Evans didn’t make a field goal again, putting him at 0-16 in preseason. Kover didn’t miss a 3 and the 76ers had 6 people in double figure scoring. Louis Williams only played 17 minutes, but his numbers look good. Jason Smith battles for rebound - (AP Photo/Fred Beckham)

    76ers News: Friday 10-19-2007

  • Jason Smith starting at center, because we don’t have anyone else. Calvin Booth? Well, the 1.1 million he’s getting isn’t looking like a good investment right now–>Sixers testing a rookie at center
  • Preseason story boredom, is Larry Brown lurking? He wouldn’t want to coach this team, really –>A coach in waiting: Is Larry lurking
  • Dalembert is nursing foot, won’t play–>Dalembert still sidelined by foot injury
  • Experience not win, who needs wins. In my experience basketball is a game of confidence. –>Sixers focus on experience, not preseason wins
  • Sixers lose 4th preseason game

Again the 76ers lose, taking their preseason record to 0-4. The Sixers started rookie Jason Smith at center over backup center Calvin Booth. He didn’t play worse than before, but Calvin Booth played just as horrible as a backup. Willie Green shot pretty well, shooting 6-11, scoring 15 points, but managed to achieve 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, but 2 turnovers. Andre Miller once again led the team in scoring and attempts. That just hurts my brain. You can read the ESPN recap here.
