If the Sixers were a good team, this season would be truly magical. Once again, Philadelphia gets a team without a key piece. Miami was without new trade addition Marion in the post-Shaq deal. This shouldn’t take away too much from a very solid game from the 76ers. They held Miami to 36.3% shooting, forced 4 more turnovers, outrebounded by 10, and took control after a mini-run by the Heat. Iguodala played like he wants to get paid, netting 25, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Iguodala is strong - (AP Photo/H. Rumph, Jr.)

The 700 Level blog landed a interview with Ed Stefanski. When does 76ersblog.com get a shot? –> The 700 Level interviews Sixers President & General Manager Ed Stefanski

Arron McKie has been pulled from the sidelines back to the court by way of a complex trade. The Los Angeles Lakers still held the rights to McKie, and he was needed, money wise, to complete the blockbuster trade for Pau Gasol. This is a good thing in some ways. Reports say that McKie will get about $750,000 a year, for three years. McKie is already getting $7,000,000 for this season from the 76ers, the last year of a 3-year gift from Billy King. McKie will act as a player/coach for the Grizzlies. Marc Ivaroni, the coach for Memphis, was a Larry Brown assistant.

2007-2008 76ers half season recap

The less than spectacular 2007-08 NBA season is half over. Time flies when your team isn’t so good. The games drag, but time does fly. The 76ers are currently 16-26, which is better than many expected. The team is equally bad at home (8-12), as they are on the road (8-14). For a young team that is a good sign: they are playing consistent ball. The Sixers are currently tied with the Bucks for the 12th slot in the Eastern Conference. It could be worse, but Miami has control of the basement. I expect the currently level of play to diminish slightly (AKA some additional losses). The defense has been horrendous all season, the offense is erratic at best. The bench, after Korver’s departure, is possibly one of the worst in the league.

The Roster

The 76ers starting roster is a strange animal. Part budding young players: Iguodala, Green, and Dalembert, and part older 2nd tier veterans: Andre Miller and Reggie Evans (calling Evans 2nd tier is a stretch, more like solid bench player).

Andre Miller has played well for the most part, at 31 he’s doing good work at the point. But, he shoots way too much for my taste and is clearly auditioning for a role on a playoff team. His defense is awful, he can’t guard any young point guards, and isn’t big enough to guard the larger guards in the league. Miller is close to his career high in points this season, but he’s also close to his career low in assists.

Iguodala is playing well, but the pressure on him to be “the man” is hurting is overall game. Some games it looks like he’s trying to score 30. Other games, he plays in the system and looks uncomfortable. I think Iguodala is an amazing talent. He’s a great defender, he has good instincts, and dunks like a professional. He’s just not finding his way in the post-Iverson game. He’s only 23 and learning by the day. I just hope we can keep him around.

Dalembert is having his best year yet. His fouls are down slightly (not great, but down), his rebounds (10.1/gm) and points (11.5/gm) are at career high levels. Some of this is just because he’s able to stay on the floor longer. I believe he’s playing smarter, and not going for every single shot block like he used to. He goes for two-thirds of them now, and getting them with another career high (2.5/gm). We all know Dalembert was overpaid by Billy King ($10 mil +/year, good for 4 more years!). He also has a trade kicker making him virtually un-tradable. Sammy will be here for a spell, at least he’s paying off.

I don’t want to wreck Willie Green too much, but he’s a gunner. He likes to shoot, a lot. He also shoots a poor percentage (40.5%) and doesn’t too much else on the floor (0.6 steals/gm, 2.1 rebounds/gm, 1.5 assist/gm 2.1 turnovers/gm). Willie also benefited from the King era, landing a $3 mil/year deal for 4 years, coming off knee surgery. Billy King was such a sweetie pie.

Reggie Evans should not be a starter in this league. He rebounds like a banshee, but can not put the ball in the hole

The bench is depleted. After the Korver trade the 76ers are left with a batch of youngins who aren’t yet ready for big minutes. Louis Williams has looked very good this season. Jason Smith is a nice surprise, a 7 footer who knows where to be and plays hard. Carney has shown some flashes. Thaddeus Young has a ton of potential. His game is very Iguodala-like, but can they play together?

Organizationally

The good news? Billy King is gone and Ed Stefanski seems unafraid to make the tough decisions. The Korver trade was a good thing. The Sixers need cap room if they want to win this decade. The Elton Brand/Josh Smith debate rages on the blogs, but there are other issues as well. When Iguodala wasn’t resigned, I was initially kind of bummed. In retrospect, this may have been the best move Billy King never made. Iggy was asking for a ton of cash, and if they had paid him the max deal he was asking for then we’d be up shit creek with little room for deal-making. Iguodala is currently averaging 19.1 points/game, 4.6 assists/gm, and 2.3 steals/gm (also 3 turnovers/gm). These are solid 2nd guy numbers - not superstar, franchise player numbers. What will happen when the negotiations reopen in the Summer of 2008 is anyone’s guess. My gut tells me that Iguodala should have taken the last offer he saw - the next one may be much lower.

What’s next

I’m seeing a 30 win season, maybe 32. This would give Stefanski a nice high pick, and a few others to play with. The Sixers should have ample cap room and currently will be in the rare position of being a real player in the free agent marketplace. There will be Iguodala and Louis Williams to re-sign, but the real prizes are Elton Brand or Josh Smith. Elton Brand is 28 coming off an ACL injury. A lineup of Dalembert, Smith, Iguodala, Green, and Miller isn’t too bad. But, what would be ideal is trading Miller for an expiring deal and trying to land someone like Monta Ellis, Beno Udrih, Delonte West, or even Carlos Arroyo. I do hope that Mo Cheeks gets a new deal. The team has played hard under his leadership. The Sixers still need a bench, but Rodney Carney, Reggie Evans, Jason Smith, Louis Williams and Thaddeus Young can be that and develop. I’m not gonna say that the future looks bright - but it’s not as dim as I once thought.

The 76ers are struggling, this is clear. I’ll start with the good news. Dalembert continues his solid play. Two games in a row he’s pulled down 20 rebounds. Willie Green (I always give free Willie a hard time when he has bad games) played great, 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting and 4 rebounds. The bad news - everyone else played so so. The bench only mustered 18 points. Somehow the 76ers were in this game until the end. Unfortunately, Ginobili shot the 76ers right out of it. Dalembert in the 4th - (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

76ers News: Sunday 1-13-08

6 losses in a row, and the trade rumors are hitting a nice peak. I’m just hoping that Andre Miller leaves town before the trade deadline, and the Steafanski puts the franchise in the pole position for 2008-09. It’s sad the we must look so far ahead, but with Iguodala playing the way he’s been playing - does he really think he’ll get a max contract with 19.1 (pts/gm)/5.7 (rebs/gm) - what else can we do. I love Iguodala’s game, he’s the next best thing to Kirilenko, but at a fraction the cost. Kirilenko makes almost 14 million a year, and everyone knows he’s overpaid. Stefanski is not Billy King. Iggy, you missed the money train kid, sorry.

  • Stefanksi is no dummy, but please…before the deadline –>Stefanski in no rush to trade Miller
  • The 76ers first west coast trip did not go to plan –>76ers’ Western trip heavy on stumbles and crumbles
  • Louis Williams continues to get positive attention, HoopsWorld –>Up Close With Lou Williams
  • Is Giricek high?, HoopsWorld –>Giricek Talks Playoffs For 76ers
  • Tom Moore calls out Iguodala –>It’s time for Iguodala to start acting like the 76ers’ best player
  • Martin Frank imagines the 08-09 76ers, he’s left Andre Miller on the team…scary sad –>How the 76ers might look next season
  • Bye Bye Kyle Korver

    Kyle Korver

Ed Stefanksi didn’t waste too much time. Kyle Korver, the heart throb of south Philly, has been traded to the Utah Jazz for Gordan Giricek and a future first round draft pick. Don’t expect much from Gircek. He’s averaging about 12 mins a game for the Jazz. He in this trade to match salary, not much else. Giricek is in the last year of his contract, making 4 million. So, this is also a cap relief move, giving Stefanski additional cap room to attempt a major signing next summer.

    Lost King notes

Not much else to say of the subject of King being fired. But, I found two stories with a different approach.

    The King is dead!

    Billy King
They said it would never happen. They said they we’re executing the “three-year plan.” Well I guess we now know it was all crap. Reports surfaced last night that Billy King would be fired and replaced by Ed Stefanski, of the Nets. Hoopshype.com has great GM bio pages. See Billy Kings here.In the 1998 draft Billy King grabbed Larry Hughes (8th overall pick) and forward Casey Shaw (37th overall pick). He also traded a future first-round draft to the Utah Jazz for the draft rights to center Nazr Mohammed. On first glance that doesn’t look too bad. Until you realize what else was available in that crop. The number 9 pick: Dirk Nowitzki (PF), the number 10 pick: Paul Pierce (G/F), and at 11: Bonzi Wells. In the 2nd round you had people like Rashard Lewis (32nd) and Cuttino Mobley (41st). I still get jabs of pain watching Pierce play, knowing that A.I. and him could have been playing along side each other in those good years. The 1999 draft gave us center Todd MacCulloch (47th overall pick) and King also traded a future first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the draft rights to forward Jumaine Jones (the 27th pick). This draft was chock full of top tier quality players. Elton Brand, Steve Francis, Baron Davis, Rip Hamilton, Shawn Marion, Ron Artest, Kirilenko, the list just goes on and on. To pile it on, the Spurs pulled Manu Ginobili at #57, the 2nd to last pick. Damn them smart people!

The 2000 draft is where it really started to become clear that King has no idea what was happening. With the 20th pick he drafted Speedy Claxton. Craig isn’t a bad pick, but with A.I. already a mainstay, how could anyone have thought two under 6 foot guards on the same line would work. The 21st pick, Moris Peterson, a 6′7″ SF/SG who could have played along side A.I. Other notable options: at 27: Primo Brezec, at 37 Eddie House, 38 Eduardo Nájera, 43 Michael Redd, and at 44 Brian Cardinal. This is in the era with Ratliff, Geiger, and big Mac: all three didn’t play the full season due to injuries.

The 2001 draft was a bust. The 76ers gave cash to the Clips for a 2nd rounder. Oh wait - we did get Alvin Jones at 57. Who? right.

The 2002 draft must have been King’s attempt at making moves. What a mess. The Sixres selected guard Jiri Welsch (16th overall pick) and forward Sam Clancy (45th overall pick). Then they traded the draft rights to guard Jiri Welsch to the Golden State Warriors for a future first-round draft pick and a future first- or second-round draft pick Also, King traded guard Speedy Claxton to the San Antonio Spurs for forward Mark Bryant and the draft rights to guard John Salmons and forward Randy Holcomb. Lastly, they traded second-round picks in 2004 and 2006 for the draft rights to forward-center Efthimios Rentzias. When is Rentzias now? Well according to NBA.com, he’s a Sixer. He played one year.

In 2003 King almost did some good things. He selected guard Paccelis Morlende (50th overall pick). This move allowed him to acquire the draft rights to guard Kyle Korver from the New Jersey Nets for cash considerations. Then he traded the draft rights to guard Paccelis Morlende to the Seattle SuperSonics for the draft rights to guard Willie Green. So, we got Willie Green and Korver. This wasn’t too bad considering the draft position that the 76ers had. But, bear in mind that King had traded away multiple picks in the previous years, giving the team very little to work with.

In 2004 King again earned a little bit of his income. He drafted Andre Iguodala at #9. The 76ers had no 2nd pick.

In 2005 the 76ers had no first rounder, and nabbed Louis Williams at #45. 2004 and 2005 go to show you how much dealing was done, and how inept King was at managing his draft options. Once again, we drafted a small guard, when A.I. was still the main guy on the floor.

This is starting to hurt me. It’s still too early to know what the 2006 and 2007 drafts will yield. All in all, King did an awful job. He wasted so much time when Iverson and company needed one more solid piece. Attempts were made, bad contracts were signed (I didn’t even get into that here) and now the result is upon us.

The 76ers are the cellar dwellers of the NBA. That will not change in the near future. Iguodala may try and leave next Summer. We have a slew of nearly un-tradable assets. I’m thinking 2010 might be the turn around point.

Somehow the 76ers, a few times every year, manage to let some scrub on any given team score his career high. I wish I could quickly compile some stats on that statement - but I swear it’s true. Again, last night Andray Blatche (who?, exactly) scored 26 points off the bench. It was that kind of night. The Sixers lost badly, 116-101, and didn’t even make a real run. At the end of the 3rd quarter the 76ers were down 30. Sixers stand flat-footed for a rebound - (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)
Iguodala shot 3-11 and Willie Green shot 3-13. The rest is just bad basketball. The highlight, again, was Louis Williams - 10-13 scoring 25 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds.

    76ers News: Tuesday 11-6-07

The 76ers are getting a few days rest and practice to regroup after the first three games. News is slim, but some additional words on the Iguodala contract. I can’t believe some people are trying to stick up for this lack of a move. Next up the undefeated Bobcats (2-0) tomorrow night at home.

  • Some disagreement about how close or not close the Iguodala extenstion deal was –>Iguodala will focus on playing, not a lack of a new deal
  • Tom Moore is a fool, and is wrong about the Iguodala situation –>Better to wait on Iguodala contract
  • Another rambling story-less article by David Aldridge, he talks about several decades of Sixers, the Iggy contract situation, the Phillies, and predictions for 07-08. You figure it out –>Home sick: A star-less team faces a star-crossed season
  • King and Cheeks will be without contracts at the end of the season –>No certainty in future for Cheeks, King
