The Sixers lost their previous 4 games by an average of 14 points. Most of the game it looked like the result would be the same. The 76ers were down 25 in the 2nd quarter, and at half time had only managed 27 points. Dalembert picked up his 5th foul at the 6 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. He only played 10 minutes. Then the Sixers made their run - or I should say, Louis Williams made his run. In the last 3 minutes of the third, Williams scored 10 points, bringing the score to 73-56. He continued this into the 4th, making two more buckets and stealing the ball. The deficit was then 13 and the 11,000+ in the stadium awoke. Williams scored 7 in the 4th, and Iguodala finished the run with a mid range jumper to seal the win. After doing almost nothing the fist half, Williams finished with 19 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. Igoudala led the team with 22 points, but again had too many turnovers with 6. Iguodala is currently leading the league in TOs/game with 5.1. The best part of this comeback win (88-92) was that Maurice Cheeks learned his lesson from a few games back. He didn’t, like before, bring Andre Miller back in the game. He let Williams finish and the finish was sweet. I’m happy to say I was there to see it. The 76ers trailed most of the game, but continued to battle every step of the way. In the end the Sixers lost to the Raptors for the 2nd time this season, 105-103. This game competitive, and a good portion of that is thanks to Iguodala and Louis Williams. Iguodala had another solid all-around game with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Williams scored 19 of his 21 in the 4th quarter, sparking the Sixers to a late comeback. His overall numbers again make me wonder why Miller gets so many minutes. In the 4th quarter Miller missed every attempt he took. Miller shot 40%, and racked up 7 assists with 2 TOs in 37 minutes. Williams scored 21 on 60% shooting, with 3 assists and 0 turnovers in just 20 minutes. Maybe Cheeks knows best - and believes that Williams isn’t ready to full minutes. But if this continues, the questions will continue to mount. Iguodala elevates against Bosh- (AP Photo/Rusty Kennedy)

76ers News: Tuesday 11-6-07

The 76ers are getting a few days rest and practice to regroup after the first three games. News is slim, but some additional words on the Iguodala contract. I can’t believe some people are trying to stick up for this lack of a move. Next up the undefeated Bobcats (2-0) tomorrow night at home.

  • Some disagreement about how close or not close the Iguodala extenstion deal was –>Iguodala will focus on playing, not a lack of a new deal
  • Tom Moore is a fool, and is wrong about the Iguodala situation –>Better to wait on Iguodala contract
  • Another rambling story-less article by David Aldridge, he talks about several decades of Sixers, the Iggy contract situation, the Phillies, and predictions for 07-08. You figure it out –>Home sick: A star-less team faces a star-crossed season
  • King and Cheeks will be without contracts at the end of the season –>No certainty in future for Cheeks, King
  • Sixers spoil Chicago home opener

The first spoiler of many to come, we hope, comes in game 2. The 76ers spoiled the Chicago Bulls home opener, winning 96-85. The Sixers pretty much led the entire game, but pulled away during the final five minutes with a 14-5 run. Andre Miller again led the team in attempts, again. He’s shooting the ball like it’s a contract year. Dalembert played solid, pulling 11 boards and scoring 14. Iguodala continues to fill the stat sheet (without an extension), scoring 22, grabbing 10 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Why would we give a guy like that an extension? Korver was the only player to play significant minutes off the bench. Calvin Booth continues to be a stiff earning 1+ million. Iguodala finishes the Bulls - (AP Photo/Jerry Lai)

    and some Iguodala news

The deadline has come and gone and Andre Iguodala does not has a contract extension. At the end of the 2007-08 season he will become a restricted free agent. This is not good news. Somone is going to offer AI2 a max contract at the end of this season. The Sixers will have the opportunity to offer any deal, but they will now pay full market price. I do not have faith that this situation will be handled well. If Iguodala is supposed to be a key piece of the rebuilding process then this should have been taken care of.

  • Sixers lose season opener in Toronto

One game down, and the Sixers did just what they promised to do. The 76ers lost to the Toronto Raptors 97-106 in game one of the 2007-08 season. The Sixers were down by 20 in the 3rd quarter and battled back to make the game close. In the end the depth and 3 point shooting of the Raptors was too much. The 76ers allowed the Raptors to shoot over 56% from the 3 point line. They did out rebound the Raptors, but gave the ball back in turnovers. Once again, like in pre-season, Andre Miller led the team in attempts. He didn’t shoot bad (7-17) but is he the goto guy now? Korver came off the bench to score 20. Reggie Evans grabbed 15 rebounds in 22 minutes! The Raptors used 12 guys and spread the wealth. TJ Ford passed out 12 assists and scored 14 with only 1 turnover. At halftime on the radio, the Sixers broadcast team interviewed Billy King. A few gems came from the exchange. First, there is still no signed extenstion for Andre Iguodala. It didn’t sound good to me. Then Billy King expounded on the rebuilding process. He talked about Jim Paxson and Joe Dumars and how he’s “studied” what they’ve done as GMs. This cracks me up because King has been a GM since 1998, while Dumars started in 2000 and Paxson in 2003. I know the situations are different, but does this mean for 3 to 6 years King had no clue at all. We are now supposed to trust this new 3 year plan?

Well it’s finally here. The 2007-08 season begins tonight for the low-expectation Sixers. It may appear that I’m not a fan of the team. This isn’t the case at all. I’m often most critical of the things I love. I just want the best for the franchise, and we’ve gotten short shrift for a few seasons now. I wish the team the best of luck and the best of health. I have faith that Mo Cheecks will do his damnedest to get this team on the right track. I just don’t know how much that will matter. Iguodala, contract or no extension will be fun to watch year long. Korver will hop off the bench and bang threes. Who knows what Dalembert, Williams, and Willie Green will do - but I’ll be watching. I scored some tickets to the home opener on Saturday night, and I’m geeked up! Besides the fact, that I am just a huge NBA fan - let’s enjoy the ride.

On to the news around the way

  • How the league works, sadly. From HoopsWorld –>Seriously: The Modern NBA
  • King says (on the Bulls), “When I heard that, I thought, “Yeah, right. You can’t build through the draft. But I’ve watched, and they’ve done it. They’ve had patience.” Unlike King, they’ve had patience. –>Will Sixers stay patient with King?

  • Iguodala looks forward to Wednesday, hoping the Sixers come through with a steel suitcase of cash. –>Iguodala talks take on urgency
  • The 76ers got their 2nd win of the preseason against the Jason Kidd-less Nets, 91-83. No one shot above 50%, except Andre Miller who shot 8-10. The Sixers defense continues to look good against the 2nd and 3rd teir players of other teams. Louis Williams played only 8 minutes, odd. I don’t have much else to say about this game. But if this is the last warm up before the real season begin - well - there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Two grown men try and hold Iggy down - (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)
